  • Telling Stories & Painting Pic

    • From: Soul_Patch
    • Description:

Painting a Picture or Telling a Story?

In a recent interview, Bono said U2 songs paint more of a picture than they do tell a story. I found this interesting, as I'd never really considered the difference before. So let's do just that for a moment. First, a few classic story tellers.

      Don Henley
      New York Minute
      Harry got up
      Dressed all in black
      Went down to the station
      And he never came back
      They found his clothing
      Scattered somewhere down the track
And he won't be down on Wall Street anymore, now

      Sting
      I Hung My Head

Early one morning with time to kill
I borrowed Jeb's rifle and sat on the hill
I saw a lone rider crossing the plain
I drew a bead on him to practice my aim
My brother's rifle went off in my hand
A shot rang out across the land
The horse he kept running, the rider was dead
I hung my head, I hung my head

      Bruce Springsteen
      Reason to Believe

Seen a man standin' over a dead dog lyin' by the highway in a ditch
He's lookin' down kinda puzzled pokin' that dog with a stick
Got his car door flung open he's standin' out on Highway 31
Like if he stood there long enough that dog'd get up and run
Struck me kinda funny seem kinda funny sir to me
At the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Reason to Believe moves us closer to painting a picture, but the Boss is still talking about people doing concrete things in a sequential manner over a finite period of time. So it's still a story.

Now let's move on to U2. Are the below three songs telling a story or painting a picture? If they are telling a story, my question is, what is it? I'd say these songs, like almost all U2 songs, are painting a picture. Broad brush strokes meant to communicate on many levels in many different ways. And like good art, U2 songs are ambiguous, open to multiple interpretations. Not so much with the Sting, Henley, and Springsteen lyrics quoted above. Sure, a man poking a dog with a stick can have a meaning beyond the literal, but the listener really has to work hard to find it. Far less so with u2 songs, which pretty much invite the mind to open up and digest the song over and over again.

There's nothing inherently better about one form of song-writing or the other. But as U2 has matured, their songs have matured, and they've become more skilled at painting pictures. At least since the mid-1980s, most of their songs can now be listened to as a seamless catalog of art created by the band and then woven into various tapestries by their fans. I think that's why Bono calls U2 concerts a "folk mass," because the dynamic relationship between artist and fan turns static music into an organic process of growth, kind of like how some people view the relationship between the bible (static text) and their religion (a medium for spiritual growth).

So where do the Beatles and Zeppelin fall on the storytelling/picture painting spectrum?

Where the Streets Have No Names

      I wanna run
      I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
      That hold me inside
      I wanna reach out
      And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name
      I want to feel
      Sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear
      Without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name

      No Line on the Horizon

I know a girl who’s like the sea
I watch her changing every day for me
One day she’s still, the next she swells
You can hear the universe in her sea shells
I know a girl with a hole in her heart
She said infinity is a great place to start
She said “Time is irrelevant, it’s not linear”
Then she put her tongue in my ear

      Stuck in a Moment

      I'm not afraid
      Of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me
      That I haven't already heard
      I'm just trying to find
      A decent melody
A song that I can sing
      In my own company
I never thought you were a fool
      But darling, look at you.
You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
'Cause tears are going nowhere baby

I love how the office comes on every night now. It makes my life. Ahhhh I'm off for two days woooohoo! And I'm going to see Girltalk. Which is awesome. This week has been fabulous. I got my u2 tickets!!!!!!!!!!!! Which also makes my life. I took pictures of them too haha. I'm a nerd. June 7th, just you wait! I heard a rumor that u2 is coming to nola so hopefully that's true. Because then I can see them here! And believe me, I will stalk that place out and be first in line. So fabulous week continued, I got some awesome sparkly shoes. They're dangerous to wear because I'm constantly staring at my feet as I walk. But they're awesome. And...I'm getting an IPHONE TOMORROW! I'm super excited about that. I'm getting a huge paycheck because of all the overtime I've put in lately so I'm going all out. My life will be over with. That phone will become my world. There's just so much to do on an iphone! How is one expected to be social and have a life with 28489378 apps to occupy my time? I guess we'll see. OH and my and my roomie bought rockband. And I loveeeeeeeeee it. I'm pretty awesome at guitar I must say. But anyways. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I'm thinking I'm gonna wake up, go work out and then get breakfast. I realize that that kinda...voids the working out but I enjoy a good breakfast okay?! Then I'm gonna probably walk around and find some awesome piece for my outfit for gt. And buy the u2byu2 book that i've been wanting to get for awhile! And I'm gonna sit and read it till my paycheck is ready, go pick that up. Go to att and get my PHONE and then go to hburg to see girltalk!. Sounds like a plan right? YAY! I'm excited. And thanksgiving is next week. I love thanksgiving food. I should probably sleep soon. I have a big day ahead of me! Goodnight internet world! u24lyf

  • Re: U2 at Starbucks

    • From: u2ireland
    • Description:

hey does anyone know if this (I believe in father christmas) will be release else where? looks to be an exclusive with starbucks?

I would like this song, but I don't drink coffee or eat anything from there and don't know anyone else that does either. so paying $15 for one song (only) is a bit much. if the $15 was all going to charity then that would be another story. as it is they only donate a dollar to the charity.

they should offer it on itunes for $2.29 that way they can still donate the dollar.

      any ideas?

    • From: jackie_llopis
    • Description:

Ok, so its been a few weeks now since the live threads and staying up late with time differences across the world on concert nights. And when the tour was coming to a close I had a feeling I was gonna be bored out of my mind and sad till U2's 360 tour kicked off again next summer, but it's actually been ok! I've been keeping myself busy with posting a bunch of blogs, and adding new topics in the message boards. BUT I do miss staying up late, talking to my scottish friend about bono's bum and Irn Bru! LOL and talking with everyone else! and trying to hear U2 through the static on 1000mikesLaughing. So to all my "thread people", hang in there till june! Can't wait till the tour starts up again! :)

Here's something i bet know one knows:  My favorite thing about Bono is the words he chooses.

Reading his NY Times op-eds is my favorite fan pasttime. As a female writer i'm way into expressing emotions.

An emotionally charged man expressing his thoughts & feelings is the pinnacle of sexy to me.

That's what i love most about our B-Man.  Bono Vox the best writer of our times !!!

  • Add New Jersey to the list of

    • From: deannamarieu2
    • Description:

Ok, so I went to The Cranberries concert on Monday Nov 16 in Red Bank, N.J. Now, since their  NYC show was sold out (that is general admission tonight) on ticketmaster I was able to buy face value tickets from the red bank theater itself. Great, dont have to pay a 3rd party and it seemed like a nice historic theater.

It was a theater with seats, but Dolores O'Riordan told everyone to get up and she even went out into the audience to wake up this sleeping old tired crowd.

It was the worst group of people sitting in the theater. they were terrible, actually insulting the band and she even said COME ON GET UP PEOPLE COME ON! and she had to get out into the aisles for the song "Linger".

I experienced this at the u2 concert  night 2 in 360  New York and in 2001 in New Jersey on the elevation tour becuase i had seated tickets.

I mean the venue did not say no dancing or no standing. so when she told us to stand  i did and security came over and yelled at me for video   taping but i didnt have my camera out. i paid 50.00 to get yelled at by some nazi security guard and the crowd was a total dud. So, further to my old blog about seats at concerts i do not like it at all and i would rather stand in a venue.

However I do need to say this, that even when seated u can sway , clap, sing or move about in your seat. these people were staring and not movin at all like it was the opera.

the band by the way was good obviously not like a u2 concert but i always liked her voice and they are irish so its all good.. glad the cranberries got back together and are able to sell tickets and all that again.

However when  i was singing and clapping the people looked as if i was insane until some others did it too. i mean the singer allowed us to get up but as soon as song over the old farts couldnt wait to sit again. i dont get it, i just dont get it!

then the old lady in front of us held her ears after the encore. what the heck, i mean the cranberries are an irish rock band. what did these people think they were doing going to a night at the opera?

I am so glad for next year u2 concerts i only have general admission.
