Raising Haiti contd

Well, the fundraiser I started at our school in northern Saskatchewan, Canada is up and running and so far I'm impressed!

The elementary-aged children at the (First Nation) Band school raised +$100 in coin (that I get to roll... very funny of them!) and the high school raised $150 and our kids have raised $81 and still counting.

The staff have been challenged and tomorrow we start collecting and businesses in our small town have been challenged and I sent in a public service announcement to the local/Aboriginal radio station for the public to drop off money that

I will send in to the Red Cross on the 12th. The Canadian government has said it will match dollar for dollar up to $50 million, anything donated by Feb. 12!

There have been cupcake sales and read-a-thons going on independently in town too.

I got my article into the newspaper last week. They gave me a full page with the story and photo of our teacher who grew up in Haiti.

I cut out hundreds of red and pink hearts and people get to write their message of hope on the heart when they donate a minimum of one dollar. I love reading what the young kids write in their not so perfect handwriting and with crazy spelling and grammar. To see how they have viewed this disaster and to see their incredible empathy for children in Haiti is moving.

I don't know if or how they are getting mail in Haiti, but I plan to pack up all of these paper hearts and mail them down to the family of our teacher so that they might hold in their hands, the messages of love and hope and prayer all the way from La Ronge. That might even mean more than a few hundred dollars eh!

  • $842 and change!!! A good effort from our kids and community I think. The only I am worried about is the ability of the Purolator courrier kid/driver to actually get the cheque to Regina by the 12th. He didn't even know I had to pay for his service ... so I'm just hoping he knows how to get to Regina haha (there's only one road south)

Anyway, i'm pleased with how much we raised and the kids were keen about it and hearts with their messages look pretty cool hanging on the board in the hallway.
